Whether you are moving in or out of Bristol, Clevedon, North Somerset or beyond, it is our business to get your house removal moving.

Moving Tips

FIRST STEPS

Get Quotes Early: Start gathering removal quotes as soon as your offer is accepted. This gives you time to compare services and be ready to book as soon as contracts are exchanged.

Stay in Touch: Keep regular contact with your chosen removal company. Completion dates can shift quickly, so check their availability as you get closer to exchange.

Book Promptly: Once contracts are exchanged, secure your moving date immediately to avoid disappointment.

GETTING READY

Pack Smart: If you're packing yourself, put everything that fits into a box in a box. Label each box clearly with:
The room it should go to in the new home
A short description of contents for easy unpacking

Use Proper Boxes: Stick to the boxes provided by your removal company. They’re strong, uniform in size, and stack safely—making the move smoother and faster.

Leave Drawer Items (Usually): Non-breakable and non-liquid items can stay in drawers—except for drawers in divan bed bases, which need to be emptied and packed separately.

No Need to Pack Hanging Clothes: Most movers supply wardrobe boxes on moving day. Your clothes can stay on hangers—no folding, packing, or ironing required.

If You're Using a Packing Service: Put aside essentials you’ll need access to (keys, wallets, documents, passports, an overnight bag, etc.) and clearly point them out to your movers so they’re not accidentally packed.

Planning for Storage? Pack for the unexpected. Storage durations often extend beyond what’s initially planned, so include essentials, seasonal clothing, and anything you might need in the meantime.

Notify Services: Inform all relevant parties of your change of address—utilities, internet providers, banks, subscriptions, GP/dentist, etc.

MOVING DAY

Let the Pros Handle It: If Hobdens are packing for you, relax—they’ve got it covered. If you’re self-packing, aim to finish up before they arrive, except for essentials like the kettle!

Final Check: Once the Hobden's van is loaded, your mover should ask you to inspect the property to ensure nothing is left behind. Don’t skip this—especially for long-distance moves.

Read the Meters: Take readings from all your utility meters before leaving your old home and when you arrive at the new one. Provide these to your providers to avoid overcharges.

Stay in Contact: Keep your solicitor and estate agent in the loop throughout the day. Let your movers know as soon as the keys are released so they can be ready to unload.
Ask your mover about a key waiver charge, which can protect you from extra fees if there’s a delay in getting the keys.

Guide the Unload: Be present during unloading to direct the team where to place furniture and boxes—it’s easier than moving things around later!

AFTER THE MOVE

Box Return: Once you’ve unpacked, flatten and return the boxes to us. We often reuse them as part of their sustainability policy. If you’ve moved far, a local removal firm may happily take them—just check with your original company.

Give Feedback: Whether it was a breeze or a challenge, your feedback helps removal companies improve and grow. Don’t hesitate to share your experience.

House removal FAQs

Do I need to empty my chests of drawers?

No. Your chests of drawers can stay full as long as there is nothing breakable or anything that will spill in the drawers.

Do I need to empty my fridge/freezer?

Unless you are being moved into storage, you will not need to empty your freezer compartment as it will stay frozen during your move. The breakable items in the fridge will need to be packed.

What should I do with pictures?

The safest way for pictures to travel is to be bubble-wrapped and placed vertically in a box. However, if they are too large to fit into a box, they can be bubble wrapped and placed in a cardboard sleeve. Anything not in a box will be blanket wrapped on the furniture van by our trained staff.

What should I do with my hanging clothes?

All of our vans are equipped with portable wardrobes so any garments on coat hangers do not need to be packed. Our staff will load them into the portable wardrobes on the day of the move and unload them at your new address.

Do you supply packing materials?

We provide all packing materials free of charge if you are moving with us. We can supply these well in advance of the move and if you have moved within the local area we will be happy to collect them from your new address once you have completed your unpacking.

Do I need to save a parking space?

We can supply you with traffic cones if necessary to reserve space for a furniture van. Our estimators will discuss whether this will be necessary and the length of the space required depending on the size of the vehicle required. Should your current address or new address fall within a parking restriction/permit holder only area, you will be required to contact parking services to arrange parking.
